| To All Members, Assistant Fleet Captain Turk Hemseri and I are pleased to be able to serve the Club again in our positions as Flag Officers of the Venice Yacht Club. We had a great 2011, offering 11 rendezvous, including our first extended cruise in years, and generated a 537 pleasurable boat days for our members. We hosted 50 Fleet Captains' lunches at the club, serving 1,043 meals and offering 20 speakers. We assisted the docking committee in the completion of the new docks, sponsored a boat inspection day with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and sponsored a wonder Memorial Day weekend. All in all, we had a very successful 2011. We are looking for an even better 2012. We have established a rendezvous schedule of 12 cruises, with the potential of three extended cruises. We are adding one day to each rendezvous, encouraging our members to stay until Monday to be able to enjoy two full days at each stop and avoid the usually heavy Sunday boat traffic on the ICW. Our first cruise to The Field Club was a great success with 10 boats attending and 51 members attending the Annual Commodore's Roast at Ruth's Chris. We have already scheduled 10 speakers for Fleet Captains' lunches through April and are averaging 25 members per lunch. Our next rendezvous is set for February 17-20 at the ever popular Palm Island Marina. Last year we had a ball, with Turk and me cooking eggs to order on Saturday morning and a group pizza making exercise on the grill Saturday afternoon. We look forward to repeating that on this trip. Palm Island Marina is one of VYC's favorite cruise destinations. It is close by, has a great heated pool and the wonderful Johnny Leverocks Seafood House. Catch the ferry to scenic Palm Island Resort and visit the white Gulf of Mexico beaches! While you're there, stop by the Rum Bay Restaurant for a special treat in a lush tropical setting. A list of future schedule rendezvous is shown below. To reserve a slip, please contact the designated cruise leader or complete the on-line reservation form under the Reservations tab in the member area of the VYC web site. Importantly, all boaters who dock their boats at the Venice Yacht Club are required to have an annual safety inspection. It is also a great idea for those not keeping their boats at the Club to have them inspected. For your convenience, we have again arranged with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary to inspect our boats. The inspections will take place on Saturday, March 17 from 9:00 a.m to noon. Please make an appointment with dockmaster Jim McGowen. Jim also has a check list of what is required to complete a successful inspection. Boaters and non-boaters are always invited to join our Tuesday Fleet Captains' lunches beginning at 11:30 a.m. in a casual atmosphere for friendly conversation and interesting speakers. Please see the upcoming speaker schedule below. We sponsor a boat-in each month on the weekends of major club events. Please consider joining your fellow boaters at the Tiki Bar on Friday nights, enjoy continental breakfast each morning in the Ready Room, party on Saturday nights, and feast at the casual Sunday Brunch. The best thing about boat-ins is that you can party hard and party late without the worry of driving home; your boat awaits you at the VYC. Please let Dockmaster Jim McGowan know if you plan to stay on your boat and need to use a transient slip. Please continue to look at this web page for all the most current updates on boating activities. Turk and I look forward to working with all members to have a happy and safe 2012 boating year. Please contact either one of us if you have any questions. Michael F. Nemser |
Greetings to all! While for some, the festivities of the New Year may be a lingering memory, mine have just begun as your new Fleet Captain Sail. Compared to many, my wife Karen and I are fairly new members of the Venice Yacht Club, but I think we bring quite a bit of sailing experience to the table. About 42 years ago, we hoisted the sails, along with our two young daughters, on our 27 foot Vega sailboat aptly named “Bedlam.” As we grew, so did our boats. Fifteen plus summers were spent exploring and enjoying the Bahamas as far south as Duncan Town in the Ragged Islands. The past ten years found us aboard our 46 foot Prout catamaran, as we sailed from Guatemala to Nova Scotia, the Prince Edwards Islands and the far reaches of Newfoundland, Canada by way of Bermuda. During the coming year, I hope to be an asset to Jabbo and his adult sailing program and look forward to my association with the Club’s sailboat Joy. Together, along with the Joy’s current members, I would like to maintain and improve her and ultimately attract some new members. I believe that Joy is a small, but wonderful asset to the Venice Yacht Club. Karen and I look forward to making many new friends as we avail ourselves to the extensive activities provided by the Club. Please stop by and say hello in my “New Year.” Also, don’t forget the Sailors' Table dinners on the second Thursday of each month at 6pm as we host a table for sailors, those who would like to be, or those who just want to enjoy good food and talk. When making reservations, please ask to be seated at the Sailors' Table.” Joe Russo |
